Fall decorating has easily become one of my favorite traditions and it’s such a fun way to kick off the holidays. In this post last year, I shared all my tricks and tips on how to decorate for fall indoors. But, don’t underestimate the power of creating a little autumn-atic curb appeal! Today I’m excited to share the essentials for outdoor fall decorating and how you can join in on all the fun this season

Oh my gourd! pumpkins, lots of pumpkins.

This goes without saying, but an autumn landscape isn’t complete without pumpkins.

Pumpkins should be #1 on the list when it comes to the essentials for outdoor fall decorating – in all shapes and sizes. And this year, I wanted to have some fun and use lots of different colors of pumpkins and gourds! For example, I chose heirloom pumpkins in shades of sage and white, traditional round orange pumpkins, oversized gourds in shades of green, and mini white pumpkins from Trader Joe’s. Whatever color theme you go for, whether it’s all white or colorful like mine, it’s important to have dimension and scale.

Pro tip: not ALL of your pumpkins have to be real either! Would you believe me if I told you that I used both artificial pumpkins and real pumpkins when creating my outdoor fall decor? Well, it's true folks! I love adding in artificial pumpkins and stems because I can keep using them year after year.

use natural elements

Natural elements like corn stalks, dried grapevine, hay bales, and wheat are the essentials for outdoor fall decorating. Their hues of gold and brown just scream “fall” to me. Especially corn stalks! I love adding corn stalks into my autumn landscape! It gives a fall front porch such a dramatic and inviting feel. And, they’re great for adding height.

Oh, and don’t forget a wreath! At the very least, just add a wreath, y’all.

LAYERING IS KEY

Line your stoop or walk way with a layered assortment of natural elements, pumpkins, mums, and lanterns/decor. To balance each side, use something tall in the back for height and pretend to “stair-step” or scale down your decor as you get to the front. And, don’t forget to break up your mix of pumpkins and mums by interlacing decor like a bushel basket or lanterns.
